Reviews are small personal interviews with a person after an event, informing him of things he does well and of things he could improve. In addition to this, there are also self-reviews - written notes for oneself in the future, and evaluations - thourough evaluations by a higher level judge on a person who is being tested for a higher level.

How to Write a Review

This page describes the process of how to create a judge review in DCIX.

The first step is to login to DCIX with your DCI number and your DCI password. Select the tab "reviews" from the bar in the upper right hand corner and either "create" a new review or "select" an existing one.

Creating a New Review

There are three types of reviews to choose from, "Evaluation," "Interview," and "Renewal."

  • Evaluation reviews are the most common type of review.
  • Interview reviews are for recommending a judge for advancement to a new level.
  • Renewal reviews are no longer used for official purposes.

Choose the type of review you wish to write and click "Continue."

Entering Fields in the Review Form

The review form has many fields to fill in. Starting in the top right corner, they are:

  • Reviewer Name. This field defaults to you.
  • Level at time of observation. This field defaults to your level.
  • Tournament role. This field defaults to "Head Judge." Enter your role at the event.
  • Subject Name. This field defaults to you. Enter your subject's name. If you are unsure about your subject's exact name in the Judge Center, the best way to find them is to enter their DCI number and click "Search."
  • Level at time of observation. This field defaults to your level. Enter your subject's level.
  • Tournament role. This field defaults to "Head Judge." Enter your subject's role at the event.
  • Event Type. This field defaults to "N/A." Enter the type of event.
  • City, Country. This field defaults to your location in the Judge Center. Enter the location of the event.
  • Observation Date. This field defaults to the current date. Enter the date of the event.

(NOTE: The Judge Center currently does not have the capability to select a year past 2010. Just enter it as 2010. In the Strengths section note the year of the review. i.e. "This is a 2012 review")

  • Compare the subject to others of the same level. This field defaults to "Average." The other choices are "Outstanding," "Above Average," and "Below Average." Choose the comparison that you feel best fits.
  • Review Language. This field defaults to "English." The other choices are "Chinese (Simplified)," "Chinese (Traditional)," "French," "German," "Italian," "Japanese," "Portuguese," "Spanish," "Russian." Choose the language that you will be entering the review in.

The next three fields are the main body of the review. Each of these fields needs to be filled with some text for you to be able to submit the review. If you have no specific comments for one of the fields, just write something like "I have no comments at this time." There are 14 recommended Review Areas that you can focus on.

  • Strengths.
  • Areas for Improvement.
  • Comments.

Drafting and Submitting a Review

You can save a draft of your review by clicking on "Preview" at the bottom of the screen. This will take you to a page that looks like a finalized review, but has the option of further editing by clicking “Edit Review” followed by “Continue.” Once you are satisfied with the review, you can go to the preview screen and hit “Submit.”

Selecting and Viewing a Review

Clicking on "Select" takes you a listing of all of your reviews: drafts, submitted, and reviews written of you as the subject. You can use various filters to find past reviews. For example, if you want to see all of your reviews from Grand Prix Pittsburgh, you can set a filter for "Event Type" (Grand Prix) then "City" (Pittsburgh). If you have multiple events of the same type in the same city, which is more likely with things like PTQs, you can filter by date or specific people.

My First Review Project

Introduction

Writing a Judge Center review is not easy. Writing your first one can seem impossible.

Every journey has a starting point. Every high level judge wrote a first review on their way to many more. The My First Review Project is a collection of firsts.

Now it's your turn to share your first review, and if you haven't written one yet, there's no better time to start.

Goal

It can be very intimidating to try to write a Judge Center review when the only examples you have are the few reviews you've received from much more experienced judges. Using those reviews as a example sets the bar too high for new judges and can lead to judges abandoning the review process out of despair.

The goal of this project is to make Judge Center reviews more accessible to newer judges who are thinking about writing their first review. Presenting an array of first reviews written by other judges should provide a more realistic barometer for first-time reviewers, as well as provide examples of the types of feedback to give.

How to Submit an Entry

Please e-mail Riki Hayashi the following information with the subject line "My First Review: [your name]":

  • Your name
  • Your level (at the time of the review)
  • Date your review was entered in Judge Center
  • The type and location of the event the review is written about (example: Grand Prix, Los Angeles, California)
  • (Optional) Your subject's name
  • Your subject's level (at the time of the review)
  • Your role and the subject's role at the event
  • (Optional) Copy/paste of the body of your review, clearly delineating the three sections (strengths, areas for improvement, and comments)
  • A brief backstory about your review

Some points you might wish to address: Why factors kept you from writing a review prior to this one?

Was there a specific reason you wrote this review of this particular judge?

What did you enjoy the most/least about writing this review?

Please make sure to get permission from the subject of your review before submitting it for publication. If your subject does not give you permission to use the review, you can still submit the background and story.
